THE ESSENCE OF US
The Essence of Us features mixed-media works, including photographs, collages, works on paper, paintings, and ceramics. The collection of works strives to show appreciation for Black culture and Creole lineage and open eyes to the importance of introspection. Using photographs, Kaylin illustrates the narrative of the Tignon Law, deep-rooted Catholicism, and traditional festivity. Using self-portraiture, she was able to capture the nature of her multifacetedness. In her paintings and collages, Kaylin uses vibrant color palettes, most associated with Black History, and transitions from realism to abstraction with clear intentions of illustrating the outer and inner worlds.
Her style and artistic approach are reflective and poignant. She expresses cultural views through compelling and visceral images. The artist is known for her commissioned portraits, mixed media paintings, street photography, and vibrant color palette. Her style is distinctive and unique, and she encourages her audience to disconnect from the externalities of life and connect to their personal feelings, ideas, and introspections.
